Study shows eight schools dominate Oxbridge admissions

first_imgA study by the Sutton Trust revealed that eight elite schools admit more pupils to Oxbridge than over 2900 other schools combined. The report revealed that the group of eight schools, which includes top schools such as Westminster, Eton, and St Paul’s Girl’s School, collectively sent 1310 students to either Oxford or Cambridge between 2015 and 2017, while 2900 other English schools sent a combined 1220 students to the universities in the same period.Based on published admission statistics, Cherwell understands that just two of the eight are state schools: Hills Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge and Peter Symonds College in Winchester. The Trust’s study also highlighted geographical disparities between regions, with areas such as Rochdale, Salford and Southampton sending just two or fewer state school pupils between 2015 and 2017.Founder of the Sutton Trust, Sir Peter Lampl, said: “If we are to ensure that all young people, regardless of their background, have a fair chance of getting in to our top universities, we need to address the patchwork of higher education guidance and support.“All young people, regardless of what area they grow up in, or what school they go to, should have access to high quality personal guidance that allows them to make the best informed choices about their future.“The admissions process also needs to change. We have made the case for giving poorer students a break through contextual admissions, but we also need universities to make it clear what grades these students need to access courses.”The charity recommended that universities should publicise their criteria for contextual admissions more widely, and explain clearly how they can affect an application. The report suggested implementing an “easy-to-use lookup tool on university websites” which would allow “candidates to enter their details and find out whether they qualify”.They also suggested that universities introduce a “geographic” element to be included in university access agreements, focusing on “peripheral areas”.Cherwell has contacted Oxford University staff for comment.last_img read more

Former KPMG pensions advisory unit spun out as Isio

first_imgAndrew Coles, Isio CEOColes said one of the challenges for Isio will be to step up to the likes of Mercer, Aon and Willis Towers Watson and offer Isio’s services to the much larger pension schemes. He mentioned consolidation as a market trend offering opportunities for Isio.“Smaller schemes are not exempt from regulation and it’s becoming harder for them to keep up with their costs and liabilities,” he explained, adding that many will opt to join a consolidation scheme, including some larger pension funds.Isio offers a consolidation scheme – Enplan – which holds approximately £1bn in assets under management for more than 100 UK pension schemes.TechnologyColes told IPE that the defined contribution market is not moving fast enough to provide for members’ needs and there is a need to improve the member experience.“The industry is at a turning point and our belief is that pensions advice needs to adapt to the new world, with technology playing a key part in improving the member experience, the quality of data and the modelling of pension outcomes,” he said.He said Isio would be investing in various technological projects with that in mind. Coles said The Pensions Regulator’s imminent consultation on its funding code for defined benefit (DB) schemes in the UK will mean opportunities for the firm.He told IPE that regulatory change and market conditions in the UK are leading to increased demand for high-quality, outcome-focused independent advice as trustees realise that a “one-size-fits-all policy is not the answer” and seek a bespoke solution. Isio, the former KPMG UK pensions advisory practice that today launched as a new independent UK pensions advisory firm, sees opportunities in offering bespoke solutions, its CEO has told IPE.Isio launched today following the completion of its sale to Exponent Private Equity and the 20 partners who formerly led the pensions practice at KPMG.Isio advises more than 1,000 clients, ranging from mid-sized companies to FTSE 100 firms, on the management of pension assets worth over £90bn (€103bn). The firm will maintain its 500-strong team across its eight UK offices. Andrew Coles, who was head of the KPMG unit, has been appointed chief executive officer of Isio, and Roger Siddle, a private equity expert, has been appointed chair.last_img read more

Haitian Ambassador encourages Trump to visit Haiti

first_imgAn invitation has been extended to US President Donald Trump to visit Haiti in the aftermath of reports that he made a derogatory comment about the French speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member state. The invitation came from Haiti’s ambassador to the US, Paul Altidor, who was speaking with CNN on Monday.According to Altidor, the words reportedly said by the president were an insult to Haiti’s dignity.“The words, they did hurt the community, they did hurt the country of Haiti…..it hurt because one, it’s an insult to our dignity but more importantly it’s because too much of Haiti is misunderstood,” said Altidor.Invitation doesn’t excuse Trump’s apologyThe Haitian ambassador, in issuing the invitation said it “doesn’t excuse an apology for what was said” and that “such words shouldn’t be coming out of anybody’s mouth, let alone the President of the United States.”During a meeting with lawmakers here last week, the President reportedly made the comment about immigrations for Haiti, El Salvador and African nations. However, Trump later tweeted that he “never said anything derogatory about Haitians, other than Haiti is, obviously a very poor and troubled country.”St. Lucia PM also critical of TrumpMeanwhile, the Prime Minister of St. Lucia, Allen Chastanet, has also weighed in on the issue.Chastanet told reporters in St. Lucia on Monday that Trump’s statements were ‘very unfortunate’.He expressed the view that CARICOM had issued an appropriate response.‘If anything, I think that maybe the African Union’s response which asked for an apology would have been appropriate,’ Chastanet declared. ‘I think there are two sides to take, one obviously from an international perspective that it’s just insulting, and particularly when you think of what Haitians and Haiti have gone through, and the need for our assistance,’ he observed.According to Chastanet, Haitians are still trying to recover from a devastating earthquake and Hurricane Matthew one year ago. “If anything, they need our sympathy not that level of criticism,’ Chastanet told reporters. He explained that the world is becoming very unsympathetic. “We need to know that we need to get our own act together and we have to do more in order to progress our own development plans and make sure that we are viable countries,” he said.last_img read more
