There is a rumor making the rounds at the moment that tomorrow Sony Online Entertainment is set to close a number of studios resulting in major job losses. The rumor was first posted by George Broussard of 3D Realms. His tweet on the matter can be seen below:Sony Online Entertainment is Sony’s online gaming arm and runs such games as Free Realms, Everquest, Star Wars Galaxies, and most recently DC Universe Online. The specific studios under SOE’s wing thought to be affected are Seattle, Tuscon, Arizona, and Denver. Austin is also thought to be having its staff number cut in half. Overall it is expected a third of all SOE staff will be looking for new employment after the weekend. We have to make it clear that for the moment this is just a rumor, and one we hope turns out to be untrue. Saying that, there’s going to be a lot of talented staff working at SOE, most of which won’t have a problem finding a new job next week.via ShopTo.net BlogMatthew’s OpinionI hope this isn’t true, but if it is then it points to the ongoing problems online games have of managing to turn a profit. World of Warcraft continues to dominate the MMO market, but while competing games struggle to find an audience, SOE had a bit more security than most because it offered a number of different games both free and paid for. Even that may not be enough to make online viable, though. While I’m sure the big name titles like Everquest and Star Wars Galaxies will survive, a large cut in staff would put titles in development in jeopardy. The only upcoming game SOE has listed for PC is The Agency. If this rumor is true, and a third of a staff go, will that game also get canceled?
