We taught him how to harness some of that speed. He’s got a good post and we should have options from there (No. five in a field of five).”Danzing Candy won the Grade II San Felipe Stakes last March when trained by Cliff Sise Jr. prior to finishing fourth by 13 ¼ lengths in the sloppy Santa Anita Derby and 15th by 20 lengths in the Kentucky Derby after leading both races. The Affirmed marks the first race under Baffert’s supervision.“I’m looking forward to seeing if what we’ve done has made a difference and to see what we have,” Baffert said. The field for the Affirmed, named for the 1978 Triple Crown winner: Curlin Rules, Victor Espinoza, 5-1; Dalmore, Kent Desormeaux, 4-1; Beaumarchais, Joe Talamo, 20-1; Prince of Arabia, Santiago Gonzalez, 6-1; and Danzing Candy, Rafael Bejarano, 2-5. 8 December 2008Henrik Stenson roared into a first-round lead in the Nedbank Golf Challenge with a record-equalling nine-under-par 63, and the Swede never let up over the remaining three rounds, racing away to a huge nine-shot victory at Sun City in South Africa’s North West province on Sunday. His succes was built upon his command of the Gary Player Country Club course’s par fives, which he birdied with consistency to lower his score and bolster his lead.A week after capturing the World Cup of Golf with his fellow Nedbank Challenge competitor, Robert Karlsson, Stenson turned in a performance of such quality that the television commentators were in agreement that it would be a long time before it would be matched again. He finished on 21-under-par 267, four shots off the record held by Ernie Els, but the South African’s mark was achieved on a course that was quite different to the way it looks today.R3-million per round! The victory was worth $1.2-million for the Swede, which works out at over R3-million per round! Not bad for four day’s work!He began the final round with an eight-shot lead and proceeded to turn in the third best round of the day, a four-under-par 68. Kenny Perry, with a superb seven-under 65, was three shots better and James Kingston a shot better. It wasn’t as if the course played easily; four of the 12-man field finished with over-par totals. Stenson was simply magnificent.South African golf legend Gary Player was effusive in his praise for the Swede afterwards, telling Stenson that he believed a major title awaited him in the near future.President, sponsors thankedPlayer also thanked South African President Kgalema Motlanthe for attending the final day at Sun City and applauded sponsors Nedbank for extending their sponsorship of the event by another three years.Perry improved every round, going from a 73 to a 70 to a 68 and finally to a 65 as he rode a hot putter in the final round into second place.Robert Karlsson settled for third on nine-under-par 279 after a level-par 72 in the final round.South Africa’s bestRory Sabbatini was the best of the South African contingent of three players, finishing fourth on eight-under-par 280. His progress was undermined on the 18th hole during the third round when he doubled-bogeyed, which left him with a level-par round of 72.Sergio Garcia, whose recent superb form has propelled him to second in the world rankings, failed to fire, posting rounds of 72, 70, 72, and 70. That left him on four-under 284 for the tournament, tied with Lee Westwood, whose scores of 70, 72, 70, and 72 eerily echoed the Spaniard’s performance as they swopped 70s and 72s.SA Open champion James Kingston finished strongly with a five-under-par 67 to take him to two-under 286 for the tournament, alongside South Korea’s KJ Choi.Justin Rose, who fought a magnificent duel with Trevor Immelman for the title in 2007, couldn’t find the same kind of form and finished on two-over 290.Defending champion’s strugglesDefending champion Immelman struggled with his game and it came apart in the final round when he posted an ugly five-over-par 77 to end on 291.Luke Donald slid to a 75 over the last 18 holes and finished a shot worse off on 292, while Miguel Angel Jiminez, despite a decent three-under 69 in the last round, was last on five-over-par 293.LEADERBOARD 267 – Henrik Stenson (SWE) 63 71 65 68276 – Kenny Perry (USA) 73 70 68 65279 – Robert Karlsson (SWE) 72 68 67 72280 – Rory Sabbatini (RSA) 68 70 72 70284 – Sergio Garcia (ESP) 72 70 72 70284 – Lee Westwood (ENG) 70 72 70 72286 – James Kingston (RSA) 72 77 70 67286 – K.J. Teams coming to the subcontinent should be prepared to play on turning tracks and India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Wednesday threw his weight behind the idea.Speaking at the launch of his fitness centre ‘Sports Fit’ at a mall in the Capital, Dhoni said there was no harm if the pitches are tailor-made for tweakers.”I have never asked for turning pitches. The groundsmen know the best. There is no definition of a sporting pitch. When a team comes to the sub-continent, it should be prepared to play on tracks that help the spinners, and that’s how it should be. Every team uses their home advantage and it’s perfectly fine,” Dhoni said when asked about the brouhaha over the nature of pitches to be used for the upcoming India-England series.Dhoni appeared a bit defensive when prodded about Yuvraj Singh’s possible return to the Test side and said the left-handed batsman is the best judge of his fitness.”It is difficult for me to say at this moment whether Yuvraj is fit to play in the five-day format. Test cricket is very different from ODIs and T20s and teams might have to bat for two or more days on some occasions. So, considering the longevity factor, I feel Yuvraj is the best judge of his fitness. It should be best left to him to decide if he can survive the grind of Test cricket,” Dhoni said.He also rubbished suggestions that the present Indian team lacks the edge, after a former cricketer said this is the weakest Indian team in three decades. “On paper, it might look a bit weak, especially after the retirements of Rahul (Dravid) and Laxman. But we are also a very different side on the field. Slowly we are growing in confidence and I am hopeful that this team will only improve with time and produce the expected results,” he said.advertisementOn the prospects of trouncing England and avenging last year’s humiliating 0-4 defeat, the skipper was optimistic but did not guarantee a clean sweep. He added that he was looking forward to playing in the next few months, despite a choc-a-bloc schedule including visits by Pakistan and Australia.”We will try our best against England. We will try to do well and focus on the specifics. We need to be fit for the gruelling time ahead. The side is doing well in the one-day format and it will take some time to get back to the top of Test cricket. We have a busy schedule ahead of us, with home series against England, Pakistan Australia,” the 31-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman said.Talking about fitness, Dhoni said it is of paramount importance and should not just be restricted to sportspersons.”Fitness is an important aspect for professional sportspersons and I think there shouldn’t be any compromise on it. Fitness is about coping with the requirements of the body and every human being should be concerned about it. In the Indian team, I think Virat (Kohli) is the fittest. Manoj (Tiwary) is also a very fit guy,” he added. On the reason for skipping the first round of the Ranji Trophy, in which seniors like Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir are featuring, Dhoni said: “Actually I have been suffering from a cough and cold and hence was not able to play in Jharkhand’s first match (against Jammu & Kashmir in Jammu).”
The Indian men’s and women’s teams suffered heartbreaking defeats in their respective T20I matches on Sunday and will have to now head home in disappointment.Rohit Sharma’s side lost the series-deciding third T20I in Hamilton just hours after Harmanpreet Kaur’s team suffered its third successive loss against the White Ferns at the same venue. The men’s team fell short by 4 runs as they failed to chase down a mammoth 213-run target against Kane Williamson’s side, who clinched the series 2-1 as a result.India made a valiant attempt at chasing down the total but were stopped at 208 for 6 by the Black Caps. This was India’s first ever loss in a 3-match T20I bilateral series decider in the shortest format. India though, had won the ODI series 4-1, the second time in 10 years.India needed 16 runs off the final over in their run chase but they could manage to score 11 runs with Dinesh Karthik and Krunal Pandya making a fist of the total despite the loss of wickets early on.Congratulations to New Zealand on winning the series 2-1 #NZvIND pic.twitter.com/x829ObFkBNBCCI (@BCCI) February 10, 2019″Pretty disappointing to not get to the finishing line. 210-odd was always going to be tough, and we were in the game right till the end, but New Zealand held their nerve well and they deserved to win. We started off well in the ODIs, and the boys will be disappointed not getting to the finishing line in the T20s,” Rohit Sharma said at the post match presentation ceremony.advertisementThe women’s team on the other hand, was chasing a much lower target of 162 but they fell agonisingly short of it, losing by just 2 runs in the end.Nothing beats getting your hands on the trophy! 3-0 series victory, well done WHITE FERNS! #NZvIND #culturescombined #whitewash pic.twitter.com/u8FSHzpQYTWHITE FERNS (@WHITE_FERNS) February 10, 2019They also needed 16 runs off the final over out of which they managed to score 13 runs.Smriti Mandhana hit 86 off 62 deliveries but that was not enough as India managed 159 for 4 from their 20 overs. Burnley manager Sean Dyche believes the Clarets are showing “unbelievable” mental and physical fitness as they combine their European performances with life in the Premier League.Burnley has given an impressive performance this season as they are unbeaten in five competitive games so far.“The fitness side of things, we were always high on that. The mental motivation is already there and it has been for a long time, and the group demand is there,” Dyche said ahead of Sunday’s visit of Watford via Burnley Express.Match Preview: Burnley vs Liverpool Boro Tanchev – August 30, 2019 Premier League leaders Liverpool travel to Burnley for the Matchday 4 of the 2019-20 Premier League campaign.“They’re all things that count, the rest of it outside the camp is all noise. It’s about your own team’s focus, the ability to drive forward no matter what’s put in front of them and I think we’re good at that.“I’ll be going into Sunday believing these players will go again. They’ll play hard and do what they need to do to try and win a game.”
Alexandre Lacazette will become a key figure at Arsenal if they look to “build around” him, says former defender Martin KeownThe French striker has struggled to make a significant impact at Arsenal following his £46.5m from Lyon last year.As a consequence, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was brought over to the Emirates from Borussia Dortmund for a club record fee of £56m and has since established himself as the Gunners’ main frontman. But Lacazette has impressed under new manager Unai Emery, despite the majority of his appearances coming from the bench this season.Keown told the Daily Mail: “I think special mention has to go to Alexandre Lacazette.“How patient has that man been? His attitude has been impeccable.“He failed to make the French squad for the World Cup then watched from afar as they went on to lift the trophy in Russia.“Emery used him as a substitute in his first three Premier League matches, then he finally gets to start against Cardiff.“So what does he do? He goes and scores the winner. Lacazette now has to play and be the person they build around. Full credit to him.”?? ALEXANDRE LACAZETTE ??? This is a period of calm for the new head coach.“If I was in his staff, I’d be saying we need to consider making a change to the system.“Arsenal’s centre-backs Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis aren’t really the best in possession of the ball.“Emery has very creative players who play further up the pitch but he needs a figure who can sit in deep midfield. Lucas Torreira could be that man and he could then help the back two out.“It can sometimes feel like we’re watching a youth team whose players are trying to be developed into passers.“Manchester City play 4-1-2-3, with a deep midfielder and two creative players either side. That may be the way for Emery to go.”Arsenal will be back in action on September 15 away to Newcastle United.
