But cars aren’t movies, and most of us don’t get to choose another one tomorrow. If I had to pick a sport sedan for a 36-month lease, the C350 Sport would come in just behind the 335i and CTS. I loved driving the C350. I look forward to driving it again. But the 335i and CTS are just a little better in key areas. The deciding factors are fuel cost, a couple of unattractively wide gaps between exterior panels and the lack of a manual transmission with the C-class’ top engine. (In case you’re wondering, the clinchers for “The Philadelphia Story” are co-stars Katharine Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart, who just edge Rosalind Russell and Ralph Bellamy’s wonderful work in “His Girl Friday.”) Prices for the Mercedes C-class start at $31,200 for a C300 Sport model with a 228-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 and a six-speed manual transmission. The lowest-priced model with an automatic transmission is a $32,640 C300 Sport with Mercedes’ marvelous seven-speed gearbox. The C300 Luxury model offers the same engine, adds standard equipment including the automatic transmission and starts at $32,900. The top C350 Sport model starts at $36,500 and comes with a 268-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and the seven-speed automatic, a marvelously smooth and precise gearbox. I tested a well-equipped C350 Sport with a $46,860 sticker price. All prices exclude destination charges. The omission of a manual transmission with the 3.5-liter will scratch the C-class from enthusiasts’ shopping lists. The 335i and CTS both offer six-speed manuals for drivers who want to maximize control and enjoyment. Neither of those sedans – nor lesser competitors like the Acura TL, Audi A4, Infiniti G35, Jaguar X-type and Lexus IS 350 – can match the automatic’s seven speeds, however. The Mercedes goes them all one gear better, but that advantage doesn’t translate into leading fuel economy or acceleration for the C-class. The C-class’ EPA fuel economy ratings of 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway plant it in the middle of the pack. That’s about the same as CTS with Cadillac’s 304-horsepower direct-injection V6, but the Cadillac has a clear advantage over the Mercedes and the rest of the class because it’s the only engine that recommends regular gasoline. The C350’s 6.3-second 0-60 mph time also falls around midpack, trailing the 335i, CTS and IS 350. Those figures notwithstanding, the C350 is an enjoyable car to drive, thanks to lightweight construction, a supple suspension, and confident steering and brakes. The 3.5-liter engine produces its maximum 258 pound-feet of torque at all engine speeds from 2,700 to 5,000 rpm, providing plenty of power for jaunts around town, racing through the countryside or high-speed passes on the highway. For a brand that’s traditionally described by words like solid and substantial – adjectives better suited to a bank vault than a sporty car – the C350 feels lithe and eager as it gobbles up highway miles and country curves. The C350 tips the scales at 3,615 pounds; nearly 270 less than the CTS and just 20 more than the lean and mean 335i. The C350 is also an exceptionally quiet and comfortable car. Road and wind noise are minimal, front-seat room is excellent, rear room is good and cargo space is about average, thanks to a 3.9-inch increase in length and a 1.7-inch boost in width. For all the passenger compartment’s comfort, it’s not an especially welcoming place. The materials trimming the doors and dash are high-quality and well-fitted, but less pleasant to the touch than the CTS’s soft curves. The color scheme in the C350 I tested was also rather somber: two shades of charcoal that were more reminiscent of an abandoned campfire than a warm, firelit reading room. The instrument panel is strikingly lovely though, with big, legible gauges displayed in a setting that looks like brushed steel. The exterior was a similar study in contrast. The front is simply gorgeous. The C-class’ wide stance, with big tires filling flared fenders, flows into a low, wide grille and a sculpted hood. The visual impact is that this is not a car to be delayed when it fills your rearview mirror. The C-class’ profile is not as strong. A beveled ridge flows diagonally from the front wheelwells to the rear fenders. It’s not objectively unattractive, but it reminded me of unfortunate cars like the Saturn Ion and Chrysler Sebring every time I approached the C-class. On the plus side of the ledger, the C-class gets the latest version of Mercedes’ Comand system, which eliminates dozens of buttons with an intuitive control system that uses a console-mounted wheel to run audio, navigation, mobile phone and other features. It’s a tribute to how stunningly good today’s sport sedans are that that’s not enough to make the C-class the pre-emptive first choice in its class. With models that include the BMW 335i and Cadillac CTS, picking a sport sedan is like renting a Cary Grant movie: There aren’t many bad ones, just different degrees of good. “The Philadelphia Story”? “North by Northwest”? “His Girl Friday”? “Gunga Din”?
“Nope, it’s a BMW,” he said, handing me a key fob with no key. OK, I knew it was a keyless entry and a push-button start. But I spent a good part of that evening snuggled up with the owner’s manual, checking out the most interesting options. One of those is a head-up display ($1,200), which allows you to drive like a fighter pilot with details such as the car’s speed projected onto the windshield. The driver simply selects the information and the brightness via the 650i’s iDrive’s controller located in the center console. The information pops up in color on a 6-by-3-inch field on the windshield, just in line with the end of the hood. With it activated, I didn’t have to glance away from the road to make sure I wasn’t blowing through the speed limit. And the display doesn’t distract from the task at hand – driving. We liked that a lot. Then there is the Night Vision system ($2,200). BMW uses Far Infra-Red technology in a camera below the front bumper. It identifies objects that are hard to see in low-light conditions by using their heat signature. It’s powerful enough to pick up images about 1,000feet ahead of the car. This can be a dicey option to use, though. The information is displayed on a video screen between the driver and passenger, so you have to look away from the road to see what’s coming. The images are projected in gray and white, with white being the hottest. And the view is from such a low angle that when you pull up behind a car, its exhaust system is surprisingly bright. But the system does make humans and animals quite noticeable at night. “BMW Night Vision offers the customer particular benefits when driving over land, down narrow lanes, through gateways leading into courtyards, and into dark underground garages, significantly enhancing driving safety at night,” the company says. BMW also says its system looks out about twice as far as others, and the headlights from oncoming cars don’t interfere with it. The third whiz-bang feature is the park-distance control that comes standard on this model. It uses sonar from sensors in the front and rear bumpers. It activates automatically, and an outline of the car is displayed on the video screen with three distance zones – green, yellow and red – fanning out from the car in a cone. The system beeps as you approach an object and the color band changes. The band turns red, and the beeping turns into a constant tone when you are less than a foot of away from bumping into something. I liked this better than a camera that shows you what’s behind or ahead when parking. Inside the cockpit, there are things that please and frustrate the driver. The adjustable leather seats are firm. (Some drivers I’ve talked to used the words such as hard and uncomfortable.) And the interior is designed for driving, with the dash featuring BMW’s familiar analog gauges with orange night lighting. The steering wheel offers a nice thick grip, too. The iDrive controller is big, but it takes much getting used to. I never did in the week I had with the car. And we had to pull to the side of the road to figure out how to switch from an AM radio channel to a satellite station. This model featured a big glass roof, but the top just popped up and did not slide open. There is a back seat, but it is a better place to put stuff rather than adults. And the trunk is generous, with 13cubic feet of space. (It’s 12.4cubic feet in the convertible model with the top up and 10.6 when it’s down.) Both models have a pass-through opening into the rear seat to handle longer items. We liked the way the car looks with a muscular front that narrows at the passenger cabin. The Web site Edmunds.com refers to this model, and rightly so, as a high-dollar touring coupe. And it notes that there might be prettier options out there, such as the infinitely sleeker Mercedes-Benz CL550 and Jaguar XK/XKR. And the dual exhaust hit sporty notes in all gears. The aviation analogy comes from technological gizmos normally found in jet fighter cockpits. So maybe BMW should include a class for users in the purchase price. When the delivery company dropped off the car at the Daily News, I asked the driver if there was anything special I should know.

1 French police have arrested 36 people after violence erupted in the streets of Lille ahead of England’s Euro 2016 clash with Wales.Flares and bangers were lit as officers charged at chanting fans, spraying tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowds.Police used pepper spray against an England fan who ran towards them, as fights appeared to break out among Three Lions supporters.Authorities said 16 people have been treated in hospital but gave no details about their injuries.The two home nations will face each other at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis in the nearby city of Lens at 2pm UK time.Many fans are staying in the much larger city of Lille and despite bars being shut, some supporters defied a ban on drinking in the street the evening before the match.Some were seen climbing road signs and while English police – sent out to help with the security operation – urged fans to behave, French police charged at them repeatedly.Late in the evening, two groups of about 250 English fans each merged just as thousands of French fans were streaming out of the fan zone where they had been watching France beat Albania.Several hundred riot police formed a human barrier between the two groups. Some fireworks were fired from the French side and a few bottles were thrown from the English side.The police then charged in the direction of the English, spraying tear gas and causing a stampede, with people sprinting into side streets.Supporters of Slovakia and Russia were also in the city after their game in the city on Wednesday. Earlier in the evening, a small group of people wearing Russian Ultra T-shirts threw a flare at a large group of England fans who then surged towards them.The Russians left the scene and the remaining British fans were tear gassed, prompting them to hold their shirts over their mouths as they left the scene rubbing their eyes and spitting.In footage posted online by talkSPORT’s Stan Collymore, one man wearing a green hat was seen smashing wing mirrors off cars parked on the street.Collymore said: “Somebody threw a, not a grenade, something that went bang, towards some England fans and the England fans have just run.”MUST LISTEN: Stan Collymore’s first-hand account of Euro 2016 fan violence in LilleHe later pointed to a man who was pinned down in the road by police, and said: “You were throwing bottles. Arnold Schwarzenegger and reprieves from state and federal courts, claiming the man, who was mostly blind and deaf and suffered from diabetes, was too old and sick to be put to death, that a lethal injection amounted to cruel and unusual punishment. “The death penalty is always wrong, but tying a blind 76-year-old man to a chair and injecting him with poison is grotesque,” Terry Davis, Europe’s top human rights watchdog, said in a statement after the execution. Davis chairs the Council of Europe, where the death penalty is outlawed. Medical records show Allen was indeed ailing, and prison officials don’t dispute his condition. However, some observers saw a man in better condition than he had been portrayed. Assemblyman Todd Spitzer, R-Orange, witnessed the execution as a member of a legislative committee debating a moratorium on the death penalty. “He did not appear to be as infirm as news accounts portrayed him. For 76 years old, he looked to be in remarkably good shape,” Spitzer said. Allen died wearing a beaded headband, a medicine bag around his neck and a ceremonial eagle feather on his chest. Two American Indian spiritual advisers visited with him in the hours before the execution. He released a last statement read by Ornoski saying he enjoyed his last meal – a buffalo steak, fried chicken, Indian pan-fried bread, a pint of black walnut ice cream and sugar-free pecan pie. But Allen had proclaimed his innocence, and his final words never mentioned the 1980 hit job that resulted in the murders of a 17-year-old girl and two men, ages 18 and 27.
